Honour Roll

In 2009 the Creswick and District Historical Society formed a small committee with members of the society and independent members, to honour deceased citizens who had not been acknowledged for their contribution to the community.

One of our main projects each year is the Creswick Honour Roll. Nominations are called for to recognise people who have made a significant contribution to the community of Creswick and District. Only those who are deceased are considered and when chosen, a citation is written and presented at an annual dinner held in May. Nomination forms can be obtained from the Creswick Visitor Information Centre or online via our Honour Roll Nominations page. Nominations need to be entered by the end of September each year.

At the Annual Dinner on Friday May 19th 2023 three more names were added to the Creswick Civic Honour Roll. Rev. Charles Robinson, Mr Gilbert Taylor and Mr Maxwell Ainley.

AINLEY, Maxwell (Max) OAM

1929 - 2022 Max served the community, both professionally and voluntarily. He enthusiastically led people and organisations to improve services for the young, elderly and all members of the community.

BENNETT, Mr John (Jack)

1921 - 2002 A qualified carpenter and plumber, Jack was responsible for many irrigation, water and building projects around Newlyn, Creswick and state-wide. A community-minded person in all respects.

BURNS, Mr Robert (Bob)

1940 - 2010 A man known for going ahead and doing things for everyone. A community "Good Samaritan".

CARTLEDGE, Mrs Cora Medill

1911 - 1994 For her lifetime of voluntary serivce to numerous community organistions and causes in Creswick

COOPER, Mr Thomas

1832 - 1900 Thomas Cooper is honoured for his role in establishing Creswick’s first water supply and his leadership in many other important civic developments.

DAVIS, Mr Stanley William

1920 - 2001 For his service to the youth and the Scouting movement of Creswick and District

DEAN, Mr Thomas Joseph (Joe)

1932-1986 Joe particularly served Creswick Youth, in football and netball believing it was a privilege being involved with young people and nuturing them

EDDY, Mrs Margaret Muriel (Margo)

1895 – 1988 Mrs Margo Eddy is honoured in recognition of her service to the Creswick Hospital and numerous other community organisations

EVANS, Mr Alexander Thomas (Tom), AO

1917 - 2009 A person of remarkable energy and ability, who served both on the Shire Council and in State Government for twenty-eight years.

FIDDIAN, Mr Samuel William

1842 - 1904 An inspirational Teacher in Creswick for 30 years.

GEDDES, Mr John Alexander Selwyn, OAM, JP

1914 - 1989 A public spirited citizen who devoted his life to the people, causes and organisations of Creswick.

HOWIE, Mr Charles Pringle (Charlie)

1859 - 1951 For significant service to the community. "His was a life closely knit with many of the public activities of Creswick"

HUBBARD, Mrs Merlyn (Merle) Florence

1933 - 2015 For her tireless work in the community of Creswick District.

HUNTLEY, Mr William John (Bill)

1932 - 2003 Honoured in acknowledgement of his contribution to local health and aged care, and his lifelong commitment to the community.

JAMES, Mr Frederick (Fred)

1911 - 1994 For his thirty-eight years of service to the Creswick Sub-Branch of the Returned & Services League and his tireless work for many other community groups.

JAMES, Mr John Stephen

1870 - 1950 A lifelong resident of Creswick, who gave exemplary service of fifty-four years to the Creswick Fire Brigade, and many years to the Mechanics Institute

JEBB, Mr John Thomas

1831 - 1910 An esteemed pioneer of Creswick who served on the Borough Council and was active in securing the town water supply, Botanic Gardens and Park Lake

LA GERCHE, Mr John

1845 - 1914 Creswick's first Forester; for the replanting and protection of the Creswick District forests, following the ruinous clearing of the Gold Rush era.

LINDSAY, Dr Robert Charles William Alexander

1843 - 1915 A skilled doctor and patriarch of a talented family, he exemplified his vocation to the benefit of all who came within his scope in Creswick and District

LINDSAY, Mr Douglas McLean

1904 - 1974 As Editor, chief journalist, photographer and joint owner of the Creswick Advertiser, his support of numerous community organisations and projects

MALTON, Miss Emma Caroline

1861 - 1940 Miss Emma Walton is honoured in recognition of her service to the Creswick community through promotion of musical accomplishment

NORTHCOTT, Miss Elizabeth Palmer

1911 - 2006 A prominent business woman, churchwoman, historian and researcher, for her lifelong voluntary service to the people and charitable organisations of Creswick.

NORTHCOTT, Mrs W.P. (Leah)

1852 - 1928 Leah Northcott is honoured for being the driving force behind the planning, funding and construction of the Diamond Jubliee Bandstand in Creswick's Market

PASCO, Mr Anthony

1830 - 1904 Anthony Pasco is honoured for the construction of many of the fine Victorian buildings still standing in Creswick and for his service on the Creswick Council

PEACOCK, Lady Millie Gertrude

1870 - 1948 Lady Millie Peacock worked tirelessly for the Red Cross and many aspects of welfare and charity in Creswick, and was the first woman elected to the Victorian Parliament.

PEACOCK, Sir Alexander, KCMG, MP

1861 - 1933 Sir Alexander Peacock is honoured for his life committment to the town of Creswick, his Parliamentary service and his Instigation of the Forestry School

POLLARD, Mrs Phyllis May

1914 - 2009 For re-establisment of the Creswick & District Band, and sixty years of untiring service to its members

RIORDAN, Mr John

1840 - 1905 John moved to Creswick in 1865 and soon became an energetic and involved citizen, as a founding member of many community, sporting and welfare organisations

ROBINSON, Reverend Charles Alexander

1849 - 1935 Rev. Charles Alexander Robinson served not only the Presbyterian congregations, but all the community for a period of 42 years.

ROYCRAFT, Mr John B.A.

1819 - 1893 For his service to the community as Secretary of the Creswick Benevolent Society, and many other onerous and unremunerated labours

RYALL, Mr Hedley Raymond (Ray)

1906 - 1999 For his pioneering work for the Timber Industry, his exceptional service in many community organistations and as a Shire Councillor.

SCHREENAN, Mr Brian William

1933 - 2016 An accomplished Shire Engineer who listened, and worked with and for the community, to bring about considerable civic growth. He always went the extra mile.

SEMMENS, Dr Edwin James, M.B.E., F.L.S.

1886 - 1980 For his contribution to Forestry, the establishment of the Creswick Museum and the preservation of the history of Creswick and District

TAYLOR, Gilbert (Gil)

1872-1941 Gilbert Taylor was an agriculturist and civil engineer and served his family, his community, his State and his Country.

WHITFIELD, Miss Marie Christina B.E.M.

1916 - 2007 For her lifetime of work with the Creswick Hospital, and other organisations.

WILKINS, Mrs Rebecca

1804 - 1869 For midwifery and missionary services to the women of the Creswick Goldfields

WRIGLEY, Mr Colin Neville

1937 - 2010 For his untiring dedication to the work of the numerous service organisations that make up the Creswick community
